Anything Can Happen Friday | Overcoming Stage Fright
Hello Everyone,
After sharing my first YouTube video last Thursday (which was a video taken from a performance I did a couple of years ago) a few of you have been asking, did you get nervous before you went on stage? and how do I overcome stage fright? I thought I'd take the time today to answer your questions and give you some advice on overcoming stage fright...
1. Stay calm. Practicing relaxation techniques before going on stage, will help take the focus of off the audience and turn your attention onto your breathing.
2. Don't think of all the things that could go wrong, think of all the things that could go right. After your performance you'll feel 10 pounds lighter and so much happier that you managed to get on stage and sing your little heart out.
3. Be confident. Any performer will tell you that confidence is key when it comes to performing in public and I completely agree with that! Even if it means psyching yourself up before hand, doing exercise before a gig is meant to be really helpful, or having a pep talk in the mirror, or put on one of your favourite songs that helps you feel empowered. Anything like that I have found really helpful in the past, when in doubt strut and fake it, but don't over do it.
4. Clear your mind. Talking things though with positive people that surround you, will help to get any anxieties off your chest, give you a clear mind and a sense of peace that you have some to talk to.
5. Eat well and stay hydrated. Keeping hydrated is really important, so when you go on stage you don't get dehydrated of lethargic it also, really helps those vocal chords. Eating well, is also important when it comes to performing, you need to remember healthy body, healthy mind.
6. Think of the end goal. If performing is something you want to do for the rest of your life, focusing on the end goal, it will help to settle your nerves. So if you want to be a singer picture yourself with a Grammy, if you want to be a dancer picture yourself winning 'Strictly'.
7. Practice makes perfect. Rehearsing your performance, is the most common way to get rid of stage fright. If you know a song inside out, it will help to boost your confidence and settle your nerves for the big performance.
8. Bring a friend or family member to your performance. Having someone you know in the audience, will be a massive boost of moral support and will help you feel 10 times better about those nerves.
9. Remember that it's ok to make mistakes, we're only human and sometimes we mess up but, it's not the end of the world. It would be better to be natural and mess up, then to look fake while trying to be 'perfect'.
10. Believe in yourself, that you have the ability to get up on stage and preform in front of a crowd of people, just as if you were back in your bedroom singing into your hairbrush.
I hope this answered your questions and helped in anyway that I could!
Lots of Love, Hugs and Kisses,
