My Vote Matters (continued) | #DearDavidCameron
Dear David Cameron,
Today was the first time I voted and as I came to my decision of who to vote for, I had a few things I wanted to say to you but, first I wanted to tell you a few things about myself...
My name is Megan Holly Nelson, I'm 18 years old and work full time in retail. After I finished school age 16, I completed a year long apprenticeship in retail, which lead to a promotion in management and ever since, I've found no trouble getting work. One of the reason I decided to do an apprenticeship after I finished school, was due to uni fees. I didn't like the idea of going to college, as I thought I would end up getting my hopes up for potentially going to university and due to university fees being ridiculously high, the thought of getting myself into debt and getting involved with student loans was too much for me! So, that's one reason why you've annoyed me, as getting the qualifications I wanted back then, was extremely important to me!
Another thing, in terms of the election you have failed the young people in Britain. Year after year, it has statistically shown that young people aren't voting and why? A lot of people ask. It's probably due to the fact that politicians aren't reaching out to young people. Although, in this election more and more politicians have made an effort to connect with young people and to encourage them to vote but, you have failed to do so. Ed Milliband has done and impeccable job at connecting with young people in this election. He featured on the 'Educating Joey Essex', which was watched by a vast majority of young people, he spoke with Russell Brand on The Trews, who is definitely not a joke, he also spoke with YouTubers Sam and Nick and Sprinkle of Glitter, who are adored by 18-30 year olds up and down the County and his advert on why we should vote, was featured by Martin Freeman and David Tennant, who let's face it are loved by every teenage girl everywhere. Now, answer me this David Cameron, what did you do to encourage young people to vote?
Overall, I'm a little disappointed with the Conservatives. As a first time voter I thought I'd get lots of junk mail from all parties trying to persuade me to vote for them. I heard from the Liberal Democrats and the Labour party but, not you. Hearing from you, either in a letter or appearing on a TV show that young people watch, would have perhaps encouraged me to vote for yourself and hearing from you in any shape or form would have been extremely important to me. As, my farther is a strong Conservative voter, he would have been thrilled if you had won me over in the vote but, down to the fact you have not made any effort whatsoever with the young people of today, I didn't vote Conservative. If you hadn't already guessed by the tone of this letter, I voted Labour, as they seemed to connect better with young people and showcase some great proposals for the working class person... maybe next time, you should take a page out of their book!
